Brent
Livermore - A Story That Overcomes Adversity
www.brentlivermore.com
Since the success
of Captaining the Australian men’s hockey team to our historic
gold medal in Athens 2004 and along with my personal development
as not only an athlete but as a person, a father of two, and as
a businessman I have built an understanding of what it takes to
succeed in life at the top.

As an elite sportsperson
and property manager I have enjoyed a diverse incite in understanding
and learning the skills it takes to succeed. By cross analyzing
between both professions I understand the parallels of business
and international sport.
On top of my
international athlete training and competing, fatherhood and fulltime
work in my new position as a Property Developer on the Gold Coast
- I have managed to continue to build and market my profile as
a hockey player with sponsorship, endorsements, image and professional
presentations.
I enjoy delivering
professional presentations because they allow me to motivate people
to achieve their own goals. I focus on motivating and inspiring
business professionals to achieve whatever targets and goals they
set themselves. Hard work, determinations, practice, training,
preparation- and anything is possible. I also focus on building
parallels between business and elite sporting teams. Qualities
of a leader and the ability to motivate and guide teams to achieve
success are similar in any field. Its important to focus on team
building to achieve team results and team success. Another of my
presentations focusses on the challenges and tribulations of staying
at the top- maintaining our world ranking and professional success.
And I am always happy to talk about my own personal insights into
the Olympics and other international sporting events. The real
story- what you don't see on TV.
Since 2001 I
have lead the Kookaburras in their mission to become Australia’s
most prolific and consistent performers in all sport. As Olympic,
Commonwealth and with a World Ranking Number #1 our challenge was
not only about becoming the best, but staying on top.

My
Story:
I was born in
Grafton on 5th July 1976 . Grafton is a small country town on the
North Coast of New South Wales. It provides a perfect environment
for all families and children to develop a happy and successful
life. It is a hard working rural and commercial community that
understands the meaning of life and it's universe resources. I
completed my High School Year 12 Certificate at Grafton High School.
Throughout all my youth I was seen as a gifted sportsperson in
all kinds of sport activities. I represented the town and schools
in a number of sports including representation of New South Wales
in soccer.
At the age of
13 years, I started playing hockey and when I was 15 years old
I was chosen to represent New South Wales at the Australian Championships.
1992, aged 16 years, I gained my first selection in the Australian
Team at the National Championships. In 1996 I was chosen for the
Australian under 20's team to tour Europe. This was to provide
the junior team with an insight to the up and coming World Cup
in 1997. After gaining selection as Captain of the Junior World
Cup team in 1997, I relocated to Perth to train at the Australian
Institute of Sport. The Institute provides athletes with the opportunity
to train, excel and develop not only as an athlete but also as
a person. In 1997 as Captain of this team, Australia won the Junior
World Cup and I was selected as Captain of the World Team. In the
same year I played my first International Senior Cap in Pakistan
in front of 50,000 strong supporters. I also completed my first
Senior Tournament.
Late in 1997
my sporting development was hampered by an operation on the vascular
system in my legs. When I returned to playing hockey in 1998, my
focus and goal was to become a permanent member of the Australian
Senior Team and to represent my country at the Olympic Games in
2000. The next few years, in the lead up to the Olympic Games,
I developed further as a hockey player. I represented Australia
in all the Senior Tournaments such as the Champions Trophy and
Commonwealth Games. In the year 2000 I gained selection in the
Australian Team to play in the Olympic Games in Sydney.
The Olympic
Games in Sydney 2000, was a fantastic achievement and an opportunity
of a lifetime. "I
was living my dream". An added bonus was that I had a successful
tournament as one of Australia 's most influential players. However,
in front of a 15,000 home crowd, worldwide viewers and teammates,
I was to take a penalty stroke in a penalty shoot-out. This was
saved. Unfortunately, this resulted in a loss in a very tight struggle
against the Olympic & World Champions and it also excluded
our chances to win a gold medal. We gave it our best and in the
end we had to settle for bronze.
After the Olympics,
it was time to look towards Athens 2004. In this time there were
many tournaments along the way. Part of my development has been
time spent abroad playing two-hockey seasons in the Dutch National
League. During the 2001 season, I was named Australian International
Player of the Year and I also played my 100 International against
Belgium in Antwerp. In 2002, as Vice Captain of the Australian
Team, we competed in the World Cup in Kuala Lumpur where we gained
a silver medal. This was considered a major stepping-stone towards
our preparation for Athens 2004.
To this day,
Athens 2004 is the greatest sporting moment of my life. Defeating
the Netherlands in the Gold medal game in front of thousands of
parochial Australian fans was amazing. Achieving this at the birthplace
of the games and having my family, including my young daughter
Kyra on the sideline, will be a memory that stays with me forever.
In the Athens heat, we were able to rise to the top and shake the
monkey off our backs, one that has haunted the Kookaburras for
many years. With Olympic gold hanging around my neck, any disappointments
from Sydney 2000 have been washed away.
As the captain
of the Kookaburra’s, we created
history in becoming Australia’s first Olympic Gold Medalist
after 48 years of trying. It was about persistence, belief, courage
and passion to succeed. Our mindset must change, as the goals posts
have been raised and shifted slightly.
After the success
of the Olympic Games the challenge is for the Kookaburra’s to stay
on top as the hunters become the hunted. We hope to not only to
be a championship team but we focus on becoming a dynasty team
that wins all major tournaments leading up to the Olympic Title
defense in 2008.
Since the success
of Athens, personally I have enjoyed some life changing significant
steps forward in life. From another family highlight of the birth
of our second daughter Zoe during the Commonwealth Games to the
continued passion for hockey reaching a personal milestone of 200
International Caps for Australia and also becoming Australia’s only hockey player to win three
Gold Medals at three consecutive Commonwealth Games, the most recent
being Melbourne 2006.
I have also enjoyed
the challenges of balancing family, career and the passion to staying
on top. I have continued successful marketing/ branding of my personal
profile and combined with the passion to share my experiences and
knowledge with professional appearances to corporate business and
companies around the World.
In the future
on the sporting field the Kookaburras hope to win the only title
missing from this successful team, with the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Following this will be our focus on defending the Olympic Title
in Beijing 2008.
Away from the
ground, airports, and glory I will continue to develop my professional
career as a Property Developer and professional Presenter as I
know how it is critical to continue to raise the bar and set new
goals.
The journey ahead
is a clear, the outcomes a mystery, but the foundations and stepping
stones have been laid. Either way the path to success will be enjoyable
and rewarding.
